The Blog has moved...

I've moved the blog to www.horseandcountryphotography.co.uk it's the 3rd tab down on the left hand page.
The layout has been changed and updated. I don't know if it's improved or not! Feel free to let me know!

The reason is that I was updating the two blogs, one for Horse & Country Photography and this one, therefore it seemed like a good idea to merge the two.

Because I had to copy and paste it from the web it's untidy in a few places but will be tidied up soon - honest.

I have also included a list of all the Horsewatch areas, I think most of the UK is covered. It's almost a year ago that we had several dogs and horses stolen. Yesterday I received a message from Gwent Police to the effect that a White Van had been seen in the area acting suspiciously near horses.

Anyway happy reading. Let me know of any new dates.

Matt and Marie Ryan - OPEN EVENING

Held in aid of the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund and the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies, with Olympic and World Silver medalists Jeanette Brakewell and “Over To You” performing with Matt and his Sydney Gold medalist Kibah Sandstone.

Well what awful weather again! Matt gave several excellent demo lessons which all could learn from even from the ground. "Keep yer bum in the saddle, on landing too" and "confidence gives a horse scope" .

The highlight of the evening was of course the Par de deux where despite driving rain, gale force winds and dull light the smiles of the riders and obvious enjoyment of the horses lit the place up.

They were brilliant and an inspiration to watch, it was a one off and a moment in history.

Mounted games were next England v Australia, by now the rain was lashing down the the lack of light prevented me taking any pics but it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors! Dare I say who won? Nah.

Anyway, once edited I will have pics to show you.

Horse Thieves in the Area...

I've received a number of emails concerning horse thefts in the area....

1.Hi all
There was a horse was stolen from Maisemore near Hartpury last night.
No further details at present, but they were photographing around that area about a week ago. Tell everyone you know.

Police are looking for the following vehicles in connection with the recent reports about horse thefts throughout the country.
It is believed that 2 eastern european men are driving around taking photos of horses and marking the roads with yellow paint, its is believed the horses are then being stolen to order.
The vehicles are as follows:

Red Landcruiser B16 RBB
Please pass this info on and any sightings should be reported the local police immediately.

More updates of the people photographing horses and acting suspiciously are coming in all the time.
The Police have just phoned us to update us after their investigations into a report of men and the N reg white van and red four wheel drive (land cruiser/land rover has been mentioned) photographing horses in LLanishen yesterday.
The owners gave chase to the vehicle but could not get the registration and unfortunately they got away.
The Police have just told us that yellow arrows have been marked on the road to the horses in Llanishen.
Also, last night Caldicot Police were given reports of a van fitting the description acting suspiciously in the Tintern St Arvans area.
The chap who had his 2 foals stolen last year in Catbrook is going to see the man in Llanishen today to find out the details of exactly what happened yesterday. I'll let you know of anything else I hear.
The Police have passed it on to intelligence to see if it has any links to a number of horse thefts. They seem to be taking it very seriously around here at least.
Why the photographing Jenny- for passports? Stealing to order? Do you have any ideas.

I hope you/your colleagues have enjoyed the sample I sent you of Stop-it-All .

For your Winter issues (mud-fever, rain-scald, open sores, hair loss & even late flies) do you have enough product to test it for any impending articles or would you like some more? Hi - I am sending this to all and sundry to show you that Bowen Therapy is not just a wacky quacky sort of therapy and that even nice solid people like NHS physiotherapists recognise its strange and wonderful workings! See also the recent article in The Times Body & Soul supplement (Sat Jan 22) which reported on the scientific findings as to Bowen's efficacy regarding frozen shoulder. This from one aforementioned NHS physio (ex! cos she's gone private!):- 'I am a physio and I did the training in 96 and have used Bowen ever since in an NHS setting!! Without a doubt, it turned my practice upside down, I was getting such wonderfulresults, and not only with pain relief, which is what our patients came to us for; but also the 'feel good factor'. I have done many other trainings and courses, but it was after Bowen that patients came back and said "I feel so well inside" or similar, that I just did it more and more. As well as a faster and more complete response rate for their problem. In the end, virtually all my referrals were coming from my colleagues. Patients would have physio, and if it did not help colleagues would ask them if they wanted to see me (for Bowen) Of this I was gettiing over 90% success rate.Chronic pain mostly, ME, fibromyaligis - all the 'no hopers' with complex problems that our 'specialist' or fragmented NHS service did not have an answer for! I was working in outpatients, but occasionally did the odd stroke on the ward. And quite a few of the staff!! It was such satisfying work, the down side being that patients would go back to their GP and ask for Bowen for their spouses and family, which did not go down too well with our waiting list!! Sadly, a new manager saw 'complementary therapies' as quackery, and she stopped me practising Bowen (and everyone doing acupuncture, if you can believe that!). I had quite a hard time of it, and eventually left and am now in Private work. The other thing to get across is that with Bowen your remit for 'conditions' is endless and I am now getting a wonderful variety of clients - much more interesting that the normal physio problems. Once you go down a holistic path, there's no turning back!! My assesments are very different now with a holistic focus, and I cannot seperate mind and emotions from physical symptoms on the whole. How on earth my colleagues can be a 'knee ' specialist and not look at the TMJ, pelvis, emotions, bowels etc etc I cannot understand now!! (Incidentally I often get their patients coming to me privately, when the 'specialist' treament doen't help)Bowen is about healing - getting to the cause, and not just treating symptoms. This for me is the main difference between Bowen and physio. Both have their place, fo course, but for me Bowen is much more satisfying. Finally, it is so cost effective! It still amazes me that for this reason alone, my bosses did not want to know more about it.' The Lusitano is a hot blood like the Arab and the Thoroughbred, and was selected as a hunter and combat horse due to its versatile, agile and courageous character, thus it can compete in today’s equestrian sports alongside the best of the traditional breeds. ICON is so far proving this.
He is by IDOLO, a Cremello Cruzado Lusitano, whom we bought as a 3 year old in Portugal. He is from the famous VEIGA stud, which was established some 300 years ago. It is still regarded as the top stud for the best horses today.
The show jumper NOVILHEIRO was also of VEIGA pedigree. Famous in the 1980’s owned and show jumped by John Whittaker. He was originally sold to France, to a dressage rider, who trained High school movements. From there he came to England and evented before becoming one of the top 20 international show jumpers in 1980s. He then started stud duties. CROWN CORNELION an eventer ridden by Pippa Funnell was by NOVILHEIRO.
ICON has certainly inherited all the characteristics of the Veiga Lusitano, being brave and adaptable in every discipline he has tried.
Starting British Eventing in 2003 at intro and pre-novice with his owner he soon proved too talented so the ride was passed to sister in law, Charlotte Keevil.
In 2004 Icon was brought foward to be Graded by the National Stallion Assossiation. The Performace Test itself is held over 2 days. Horses are required to perform a dressage test, ridden and loose show jump as well as a cross-country course at BE Novice level. In addition to this they are ridden by a judge and marked for the ride as well as being assessed for type, conformation, movement and temperament. A Vet is present throughout. He achieved Grade 1 Status.
He was also awarded Grade 1 by The Arab Horse Society and is part of their Premium Stallion Scheme. One of the specific aims of the scheme is to encourage the testing of bloodlines and subsidize the breeding from horses that have proved themselves both under saddle and in-hand, and encouraging the use of Arab blood in modern Sport Horse Breeding.
Premiums are paid to mare owners on registration of a foal. Mares can also be brought into the scheme by being brought forward to one of a number of venues. Mares do not have to be registered with the AHS to be eligable.
The Arabian horse is the ancester of the thoroughbred and has contributed in the formation of many other breeds. To name just one, Tamarrillo is proof that the Arab remains a valuble cross when breeding a top class morden day Sport and Performance Horse.
Icons dam, LUNIFAH also has some prestigous lines in her pedigree. Closely related to the dam of HACHIM, a former Premium Stallion who won the Dubai World Endurance Championship 2005
2005 saw Icon have some fantastic Eventing results including a win at Stockland Lovell Novice, 2nd at Cheltenham Novice and winning his first 2day event at Chepstow on his Dressage score. It was a "with steeple-chase" format which he thought great fun, also winning the prize for the closest to xc optimum time.
He completed Hartpury CCI* having scored a respectable Dressage score 49, clear xc round found them lying in 9th place before show jumping. But with a couple of poles rolled it was enough to be out of the places but we were still thrilled to have completed safe and sound.
Only managing a few BSJA outings the highlight was at the Bicton 3 Day Jumping Show in July. Placed 2nd on Saturday mornings BN class, and 5th in the Novice Derby in the afternoon. With some 80 plus entries Icon was one of only 6 clear rounds jumped. Sunday saw another 2nd in the morning's BN. Before returning home in time for lunch! He now has £160 BSJA winnings and is an Intermediate eventer.
Regular visits to West Kington Stud in Wiltshire find us eagerly awaiting Icons first foals this spring.
He has also learnt some High School movements and has done some display work and Dressage to Music Demonstrations
In October he showed off these talents at the Bath and West Equine Fair in Traditional Iberian costume to Spanish music.
His character and temperament is honest, sane as well as brave and courageous. He gives the most amazing ride being completely responsive and sensitive to the aids either body or voice, and is very forward going without being strong in any way.
He has earned his title of " The Ultimate All-Rounder" with his proven competition record and his willingness to try and succeed at everything that has been asked of him.
Icon is a homebred Lusitano/Arab, who is proving to be an extremely versatile, talented horse. So far, in his short competitive career, he has wins/places, points and money BSJA, British Eventing and British Dressage.

Rescue Rainbow Bridge
Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often.He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be.But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge.With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for a while to explain it to him.You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge.The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life."Watch, and see" said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together."What happened?""That was a rescuer." The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. I therefore found it sad that others have reintroduced the plant to five fenland sites.

Common Ragwort is poisonous to horses and other livestock if eaten either in its green state or dried as forage. Under the Weeds Act 1959 action can be taken to require an occupier to take action to prevent its spread where there is a risk of spread to land used for grazing horses or livestock, land used for forage production and other agricultural activities.
The provisions of the Weeds Act 1959 only apply to Common Ragwort. Other species of Ragwort may be toxic to horses or other livestock but are less common or relatively rare, for example Fen Ragwort is protected. Common Ragwort is widely found in England and in some situations can be difficult to control. In 2004 Defra published a Code of Practice for Common Ragwort that provides comprehensive guidance on how to develop a strategic and cost effective approach to weed control.

Dear Lucy, I'm sorry to contradict your experts, but , although it is true that only common ragwort is controlled by the Ragwort Control Act 2003, all types of ragwort are poisonous to horses and other grazing animals. (see BHS.org.uk/_Attachments/Resouces/1089 or just do a google search on senecio jacobaea). DEFRA issued a code of practice in 2004 and you will see that it refers to hazards from areas surrounding grazing areas, due to the spread of seeds. Please review your research, it is NOT only common ragwort that causes a worry. I would ask you to help to stop the replanting of ragwort in any form. THE BRITISH HORSEBALL ASSOCIATION 2ND LEAGUE WEEKEND RESULTS

Newnham -on - Severn horseball teams had an amazing weekend of results, when they attended the 2nd British Horseball Association league weekend at Brooksby in Nottingham which was held last weekend. The Newnham U16 Junior team had fantastic results ,winning all there games they took part in on the Saturday and Sunday making a total of 19 goals all together. Nottingham Juniors who have taken 1st place at the league matches for some time now, were well behind the Newnham team coming in 2nd with a total of 11 goals. Newnham's U16 Junior coach Caz Maycock was extremely pleased with her junior teams performance over the weekend.

Petition the Government

Dear BHS Member
You may or may not be aware of the recent court ruling which has decreed that 29 of the equines rescued from Spindles Farm in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, must be returned to the Gray family, four members of which are awaiting trial on offences under the Animal Welfare Act (2006). A further 82 horses must be removed from the sanctuaries where they are currently housed, to be sold at public auction on May 3rd.

Obviously this ruling defies any logic and, while it will be hard to overturn, we are asking you to do what you can. To this end can you please take a couple of minutes to add your name to the online petition which has been organised by the National Equie Welfare Council

Vale of Usk Riding club Team Winter Dressage Qualifier Winners!!!
A huge congratulations to both participating teams. Helen Johns, Liz Lucas and Anna
Tucker, who made up the winning team despite losing their fourth team mate, myself–
Katie Phelps (due to a dysfunctional lorry).
The team will now go forward to compete at the Hartpury Winter Championships on
the 5th of April 2008. Feel free to come and show support!
A special congratulations to the following individuals for
their achievements on the day:
Liz Lucas—2nd in her arena for the Prelim 12
Helen Johns— 2nd overall for the Novice 27 Test
Anna Tucker—5th overall for the Novice 27 Test
Winter Indoor Show Jumping Qualifiers
A pat on the back for our two teams who competed at
Pencoed College on the 24th February 2008. Our ‘B’ Team had a confident first round
going threw with a clear 0, 0, 0, score (No jumping faults—best 3 scores counted) and
came 7th overall. Not such a good day for our ‘A’ team but we all shared a good laugh
and a very much enjoyable day.

Competitors for these teams were chosen on a
first come first serve basis and teams were formulated
from the names we had put down. Preentries
must go to Stoneleigh many weeks before the competition and this must contain
a realistic number of willing competitors. If you don’t tell us your interested we can
only enter the number of teams which reflect our current number of interested numbers.
Thank Goodness for emails! This year I feel that we have made a huge advancement in
communication skills and keeping our club close to what members want and what
member need. We hope to improve our advertising of these team events for our members
but its definitely worth making a note of the events and their times to get in for
next year! We would love to see some new faces— to test Liz’s co-ordinating skills!
Liz would like to hear from members wanting to compete in the Team Hunter Trials

Passports
Welsh Legislation (Horse Passports (Wales) Regulations 2005)
This legislation requires all owners to obtain passports for each horse, pony, donkey and
other equidae they own by 28 February 2005. After this date a horse must be accompanied
by its passport when: -
· It is moved into or out of Great Britain
· It is moved to other premises for competition purposes
· It is moved to the premises of a new keeper
· It is moved to a slaughter house for slaughter
· It is moved for the purpose of sale
· It is moved to a new premise for breeding purposes.

Flu Vaccinations
1st Primary Vaccination
2nd Primary Vaccination between 21 and 92 after (a horse is eligible to compete 7 days after
this vaccination)
Booster Vaccination between 150 and 215 days after second primary injection
Subsequently Booster injections must be given at intervals no longer than 1 year apart
Transport Rules
The Welfare of Animals During Transport Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005
The new transport regulation came into force on 5 January 2007, and applies across the
European Union (EU). Some elements of the regulation do not come into force until 2008
(Competency Certificates) or later. The regulations aim to improve the welfare of animals
during transportation and to bring consistency across the European Union.
It is important to note the regulation requires everyone transporting animals to ensure all animals
are fit for the intended journey. Journey times should be kept to a minimum. Those
handling animals are trained and competent. The vehicle and its loading/unloading facilities
are designed, constructed and maintained to avoid injury and suffering. Water, feed and rest
are given to the animals as required, and sufficient space and height is allowed.

- Commercial hauliers
· professional horse racers
· animals being transported to be sold as part of a business
· those who move horses in connection with professional riding and livery

Fight the yellow peril early!
Ragwort is a native species to the British Isles, and is a weed specified
under the Weeds Act 1959.
Ragwort contains alkaloid toxins that, if eaten by horses or
any grazing animal, can have debilitating or fatal consequences. The
highest concentration of toxin is found in the pollen, then in order, the
leaves, stems and roots. The effect of the toxin is cumulative and irrevocable,
and as it builds up in the body results in liver failure. The build up
is undetectable until it finally reaches the critical level at which symptoms
occur.
Ragwort – The Law
All land-owners have a responsibility to control the spread of ragwort
Ragwort regenerates from both SEED and ROOT FRAGMENTS
1. Common ragwort is naturally a biennial, but changes to a perennial if constantly cut.
2. One plant can produce 150,000 seeds
3. Seeds of 2 types: heavy ones to drop near to parent plant and regenerate locally, and ones
with hairs that can travel in the wind for distances of up to 80 metres.
4. Seeds can lay dormant for 20 years. At the end of that time 70% are still viable.
5. Cutting / pulling when plants are flowering, even with immature flowers, can result in viable
seed being shed. Flowers present when stems are cut and left will produce viable
seeds.
6. Seeds also travel long distances in water.
7. Seedlings germinate when soil disturbed / cultivated / poached, even in worm casts.
8. Rosettes re-grow from1cm+ root fragments left after plants pulled or dug.

April - Tapeworm = Pyrantel or Equitape
May - Routine worming = use a Normectin, Eraquell or Invermectin based
wormer (controls: bots / strongyles / bloodworms/ roundworms / thread worms /

The above is only a guideline to effective worming and is taken from various websites.

Laminitis: It’s that time of year again
Laminitis is a common painful condition of horses and ponies feet.
This disease is caused by inflammation and damage of the laminae
within the hoof capsule. The function of the laminae is to suspend the
pedal bone within the hoof and to transfer the body weight from the
lower limb to the ground. Normally the laminar tissue forms a secure
bond between the bone and the hoof. When this tissue becomes inflamed
it can become damaged to such an extent that this crucial bond is weakened. This may allow the
pedal bone to displace within the hoof capsule resulting in permanent damage. In severe cases the pedal
bone may fall through the sole of the foot.
Clinically laminitis is characterised by increased digital pulses and a distinctive lameness.
The pony may be reluctant to move, or even to stand. Also there will be tendency to adopt
a “laminitic stance” where the animal leans back to take most of their weight on their heels
away from the painful laminae. Cases of laminitis can range from mild short lived soreness
to very severe life threatening lameness and because the condition can be very unpredictable
laminitis should be viewed as a veterinary emergency.
Treatment of laminitis centres around three principles, controlling the inflammation and pain, improving
the blood supply to the damaged tissues and supporting the pedal bone in a normal position.
The mainstays of anti-inflammatory therapy in the horse are the drugs known as NSAIDs of which
Phenylbuazone is the most widely used, although other options have become recently available such as
Finadyne or Metacam. These drugs act both as anti-inflammatories and painkillers
and are a crucial part of treating laminitis. Several drugs are available to dilate the
blood vessels to the foot these include acepromazine (better known as a sedative)
and nitroglycerine.
Solar supports, in the form of pads or deep bedding are vital in reducing the
chances of the pedal bone moving within the hoof capsule.
Although in the vast majority of cases the treatment of laminitis is successful it must be said that prevention
is definitely preferable to cure. While scientists worldwide are trying to piece together the exact
mechanisms which cause laminitis some of the initiating factors are well known. The most common
cause is excessive carbohydrate intake, usually too much grass. Obesity is also a strong predisposing
factor. Native ponies are not designed to live on managed fertilised pastures and have a real tendency to
store fat. This is extremely detrimental to their health and dramatically increases their risk of developing
laminitis. Older ponies with chronic Cushings syndrome may also suffer from persistent laminitis. If you
think your pony has any of these predisposing factors it is definitively worth
getting advice from your vet as once an animal has had laminitis it will remain
more likely to have another episode for the rest of its life.

Show Jumping
We’ve all had great fun with our show jumping at Great Pool Hall with Eurig Eynon. We have no training
dates scheduled at the moment due to members concentrating on the Dressage competitions coming
up and of course the Hunter Trials at Hilltop Ledbury. However, if I (Katie Phelps) receive interest of
members wanting lessons in this discipline, Eurig is only a phone call away. Otherwise, more dates will
be organised following our April competitions.
Cross Country
Scheduled training session was held at Tack Farm, Ullingswick, with an instructor by the name of Don
Campbell. Don has completed most of his training in France and was a pleasure to be taught by. Despite
the dreadfully wet weather we had at the training session he is keen to help us all again in the upcoming
session at Golden Valley Dulas!

That out of the way, I have recently attended clinics with Ken Faulkner of Australian Natural Horsemansip and also his UK instructer Martha.
After many clinics over the last 8 yrs, with many Parelli and other instructors I am very impressed with them. The courses are structured and clear and lots of fun, whilst very challenging.
If you are interested in getting some help to guide you to a better understanding and partnership with your horse, any age, breed, size, shape:in dressage, show jumping, western etc., please look at the enclosed form and make contact.
You don't have to have a problem to benefit, you can always improve your communication with your horse however good it already is.

Hi there, Please find enclosed details of my stolen horse Molly.

I'm desperately trying to find her. She was taken out of her field on
the night of Thursday June 1st 06 . The fence was broken and she'd been
loaded into a box or trailer. The more people know about the theft the
better.

If you should come across her at any sales, private or auction or think
you may have seen her in a field or stables nearby, please could you let me know.
Please could you circulate this to as many people as possible, including any contacts you may have in Ireland or abroad.

If you have a notice board, I would greatly appreciate it if you could please print out the poster and put it up and leave it up for a long as possible, she may not resurface for months/years.

As you can see from the photos, she has a very distinctive face. She has one wall eye on her left hand (nearside) and mottled patches on the lower part of her stomach. She has 2 black ears and a white mane and forelock which in itself is quite unusual.

*THERE IS A REWARD OF £500 *if your phone call leads me to finding her!

I am prepared to come to a fair arrangement if you have innocently bought her.

The Equine Facilitated Learning section, unique to the UK, shows how guided interaction with horses can be the key to solving learning difficulties in challenged individuals. Supported by parents and health professionals alike.

Currently reviewed in May 2006 edition of 'Horse' "Franklin Levinson is one of the lesser known American horse trainers to come to this country, yet after watching this DVD, I fail to understand why. Just about to embark on his fourth UK tour, Franklin is a quiet man with a passion not only for horses, but also for people, and for developing a partnership between the two.

Franklin's philosophy is that horses are seeking an appropriate relationship with humans, which stems purely from trust. 'I'm not looking for obedience from the horse', he states, 'I'm looking for a partnership'.

Equine Facilitated Learning forms a central part of the film. He is shown working with children and horses in this DVD - the sight of one young boy with various medical problems gazing up at Franklin in awe and following his every word, subsequently handling a large horse with ease, is inspiring.

The DVD is very watchable and while it's possible to go to specific sections, I advise viewing the entire thing. Franklin is shown working with horses displaying common problems, but this shows viewers that problems can be solved rather than suggesting they now have the tools with which to conquer the world. The simplest ideas are explained but I would describe it more as an eye-opener. There was no hard sell; quite simply I want to know more.

As a fan of 'natural horsemanship' methods, I expected to like this DVD. However, I didn't expect something so familiar to strike such a different chord. Please check your ads - is that saddle still for sale since last Feb? I will be having a sort out and deleting most of the older ones by the next issue. Unless you tell me otherwise of course.

There are loads of new show dates coming in - Thanks to Roger & Sarah. Also if you are organising shows and want Goytre Photographic to take photos you'd better let me know soon - we intend to do more weddings this year and may not be available if you leave it to the last minute. It would also be nice to know if you want us to pay a trade stand fee.

If you look on the bit marked Goytre Photography you'll see a photo of my horse - Arty. I've mentioned him enough times in the past and thought it would be nice for you to see him. The dog was a photograph I took for a customer, I can make your dog look like this too....!

If I've missed anything out that you have sent me please let me know, I usually update this blog as I go along but have been a bit slow the last couple of weeks - yes I know, nothing new there then!

Another bit of useful software (free is at plaxco.com) I will shortly send it out to you and ask you to update your details. It's not a virus type thing and is useful - of course you don't have to fill it in if you don't want to.

Our horses love the stuff, but we are unable to obtain any more from our usual supplier.

Couple of things:
An update on the Safer Routes for Riding in Monmouthshire project. The preliminary stakeholder meeting of people and organisations with an interest in 'safe off road riding' went off well, with commitments of funds and support from a number of countryside bodies. We agreed our aims are to promote, establish and encourage the use of a 'whole county' network of off road routes, including bridleways, forest tracks and to set up toll rides where no other means for safe riding exists. Next step (having taken a break for August) is for the small co-ordinating committee to meet to set up the organisation, formally. From there, we can apply for grants and funds to progress our concerns, probably aiming to employ a project worker, since this is all a big task! We'll keep you (and all your readers!) informed as to progress.
Second thing.
I am selling on behalf of her owners a pony who has been on loan to us for the last year. She is a delightful 11.3hh 12 year old grey mare - registered Section A (and good blood lines), who has given my youngest daughter lots of confidence with her jumping and XC, while she was waiting to grow into our NS pony. Cariad has done all PC activities, including carrying a nervous lead reiner at our three day rally, and is easy to do in all respects. She is a good jumper and picks up to the standard of rider, so I'd say she is a great first or second pony. She has competed SJ at Brooms and XC in a number of mini tetrathlons. Hacks safely alone or in company and is unfazed by traffic, dogs, etc on country lanes. We will be very sad to see her go, but we haven't the space to keep her and our others, so her owners have made the decision to sell, now. She is priced at £1200 including her tack but her owners say that the right home is more important than price. (though I think she is worth every penny!) Tel: Sue Pritchard 01291 690200

I went to Apassionata in Birmingham last night, contrary to other shows I have seen it was excellent. It is a pity that it won't be anywhere nearer as it is worth going to. Admittedly the horse doing One time changes was only happening in the front legs BUT there was a magical Shetland doing Piaffe and Passage and Courbettes etc with the man just holding a piece of string and a dressage whip. A loose Andalusian Stallion playing with its owner.and a very clever and complicated quadrille at the end. Singers and dancers. It really was great. and was a very slick and professional performance.

Hi - I am sending this to all and sundry to show you that Bowen Therapy is not just a wacky quacky sort of therapy and that even nice solid people like NHS physiotherapists recognise its strange and wonderful workings! See also the recent article in The Times Body & Soul supplement (Sat Jan 22) which reported on the scientific findings as to Bowen's efficacy regarding frozen shoulder.

This from one aforementioned NHS physio (ex! cos she's gone private!):-
'I am a physio and I did the training in 96 and have used Bowen ever since in an NHS setting!! Without a doubt, it turned my practice upside down, I was getting such wonderfulresults, and not only with pain relief, which is what our patients came to us for; but also the 'feel good factor'. I have done many other trainings and courses, but it was after Bowen that patients came back and said "I feel so well inside" or similar, that I just did it more and more. As well as a faster and more complete response rate for their problem. In the end, virtually all my referrals were coming from my colleagues. Patients would have physio, and if it did not help colleagues would ask them if they wanted to see me (for Bowen) Of this I was gettiing over 90% success rate.Chronic pain mostly, ME, fibromyaligis - all the 'no hopers' with complex problems that our 'specialist' or fragmented NHS service did not have an answer for! I was working in outpatients, but occasionally did the odd stroke on the ward. And quite a few of the staff!! It was such satisfying work, the down side being that patients would go back to their GP and ask for Bowen for their spouses and family, which did not go down too well with our waiting list!! Sadly, a new manager saw 'complementary therapies' as quackery, and she stopped me practising Bowen (and everyone doing acupuncture, if you can believe that!). I had quite a hard time of it, and eventually left and am now in Private work. The other thing to get across is that with Bowen your remit for 'conditions' is endless and I am now getting a wonderful variety of clients - much more interesting that the normal physio problems. Once you go down a holistic path, there's no turning back!! My assesments are very different now with a holistic focus, and I cannot seperate mind and emotions from physical symptoms on the whole. How on earth my colleagues can be a 'knee ' specialist and not look at the TMJ, pelvis, emotions, bowels etc etc I cannot understand now!! (Incidentally I often get their patients coming to me privately, when the 'specialist' treament doen't help)Bowen is about healing - getting to the cause, and not just treating symptoms. This for me is the main difference between Bowen and physio. Both have their place, fo course, but for me Bowen is much more satisfying. Finally, it is so cost effective! It still amazes me that for this reason alone, my bosses did not want to know more about it.'

Access to Smugglers Run is very easy with the M4 Motorway just 15 minutes away. We have been operating for 3 years and have been home to many thrilling events, although there are future intentions for us to have an indoor riding school, which will be used for indoor shows through the winter, an outdoor menage, that will be used for lessons and as a warm up arena for the riding school, trekking centre and have Equestrian holidays. All of these future prospects are likely to take time, but we are hoping to have the outdoor menage up and running by this winter. We also have a hunter trial course, which comprises of 21 fences set at a height of 2’6’’. This year we have scheduled, two horse fairs, two hunter-trails and eight shows, which will incorporate show jumping, showing and hopefully dressage and gymkhana games. Our livery yard accommodates 16 stables at present and hopefully by next winter there will be 21 stables. Smugglers Run started in 2002 and is organised by myself, Jennifer Williams. I am a keen show-jumping competitor myself and I have many thrilling and exciting ideas for Smugglers Run. The name Smugglers Run came from a horse that I used to ride and had good results from in 2002-2003. Unfortunately the horse Smugglers Run was sold along with another of my horses in 2003 because the land, known now as Smugglers Run came up for sale. I always wanted to own my own land and run Equestrian events, so I sacrificed my horses/rides for the land and named the land after my favourite horse at that time- Smugglers Run.The show ground is situated between Manmoel, Crumlin and Oakdale. We are close to Manmoel mountain and indeed neighbouring mountains which supply scenic trekking rides and beautiful views of the welsh mountains and villages. Through out the summer we hold many unaffiliated show jumping shows. We have our own derby class, that includes a Bank and a Devils Dyke, Championships of Great Britain Qualifiers, Team Show jumping, Pairs, A Puissance and we have our own Championships running through the year as well as a points system. At the end of the season we have an awards evening which reflects on the success of that year and looks at the riders who have improved through the year on horses and ponies, riders who have accumulated the most points in the points system, the winners of the derby and championship classes, as well as many other awards that are given out to competitors and helpers. We also hire out our facilities for schooling and lessons, which helps riders who are having trouble with their horses or who would like to practice either over the hunter trial course or the show jumps before an event. We are now looking forward to 2005 and would like to wish all competitors good luck and hope to see you all in the summer. Now it wouldn't be fair to call any one the worst but Master come in for more repairs than Weather Beater and Rhino are the best (so they should be at that price!) I've got one of the Robinsons own Requisite Range, can't say I'm very impressed. The lining needs stitching all the time and so do the leg straps. I must say that I have been impressed by Nigels speedy turn around with rug repairs and proofing etc. Recommended.
